One crazy idea I had a few years ago, was to ask students to use the scene were Snoopy is making the Thanksgiving dinner and create a budget for hosting a similar one. This can be a fun project because it allows you to share a simple meal and gets them to use online shopping tools to generate a budget.
Supplies
- 1 bag of plain or butter microwave popcorn for every 3 students.
- 1 large bag of pretzels for every 8 students
- 1 large bag of jelly beans for every 8 students
- 1 loaf of bread for every 10 students.
- Be sure to check for allergies
Directions
Now have the students make a list of how many people might attend a friend’s giving like Charlie Brown hosts
Have them use the online grocery store to purchase all their food based on the calculations that you use for servings.
Then have them reflect on if they think this is more or less than what they thought a friend’s giving would cost.
For extension activities, have them breakdown the cost in relation to working different kinds of hourly jobs. How many hours does a person have to work to host a party is a great way to give students cost analysis perspectives.
No matter what, make some memories with students and let them know how grateful you are for having them in your classroom.
This is part of my Comics in the Classroom series where I look at the importance of the comic book industry and how to use them as resources in the classroom. To read more check out my other posts. (Link)
