This school year, I’m revisiting some ideas from last year to encourage student participation in diversity events using Adobe Express. As the sponsor for STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program) in Kentucky, I’ve noticed that students create incredible digital art projects. However, many of these projects never make it to the state competition.
Last year, I tried to create a space where students could develop artwork, posters, podcasts, and more, celebrating their identities and the diversity of our school. Unfortunately, I didn’t get much student response. So, this year, I’ve moved that creative space to a new location in the building and revamped the protocols. I’m focusing more on promoting diversity rather than just preparing for a competition. The goal is for students to create and share their work in the school’s shared spaces, not just for the competitive side of STLP.
Tools and Strategies
- Diversity Calendar Posters
I started by using the diversity events calendar from First Book, which is available as a free PDF on their website. I took screenshots and turned them into a calendar poster for the hallway, covering August 2024 to May 2025. Each month has a brief description, and I included a QR code at the bottom so students can easily submit their work. - Updated Information Posters
The information posters around the school have also been updated with a fresh design that emphasizes diversity and student work. These posters include the QR code directing students to the submission space. - Google Form for Submissions
The QR code on the posters links to a Google form where students can submit their work. The form clarifies that submissions will be produced and published within the school and gives students the option to submit their work for STLP competition or not.
Moving Forward
One key aspect is that you can’t get student work submitted if they’re not turning it in. By making these changes, I’m hopeful that more students will engage with the process. Even if they submit their work for in-school display, it’s a step closer to having it considered for state competition.
