TDIH: Battle of Tippecanoe

Lithograph from the LOC of the Battle of Tippecanoe. This would be the military highlight that would launch William Henry Harrison into becoming POTUS and then dying 3 months later.

OTD future POTUS William Henry Harrison engage the British army along the banks of the Wabash River. During the battle only 1500 soldiers fought but it became a tipping point for Harrison’s frontier army in the Indiana Territory. Shawnee soldiers under the leadership of Tenskwatawa failed to defeat Harrison’s troops and retreated from the territory. The tribal alliance formed by Tecumseh quickly frayed and forced the Shawnee to align with the British. This caused the smaller territorial conflict to become part of the larger War of 1812. The successes of Harrison’s army during the war years made him a hero and helped hiim become POTUS later. Read here for more: LOC War of 1812 NPG War of 1812 Battlefield Trust
