During the 1950s, POTUS Eisenhower asked Congress to begin the process of developing a permanent launch operations facility under the direction of a civilian leadership group. As a result, large parts of the module program based in Florida began buying up and developing property on Merritt Is. This would expand the Cape Canaveral Launch Operations Center. It would be renamed after JFK’s assassination in 1963. It is home to the famous pads 39A and 39B where Apollo and Space Shuttle missions launched from 1967-2011. Today, a combination of NASA, NOAA, SpaceX, and military rockets launch from the facility.
